5 People You Meet In Heaven

Mitch Albom wrote the book, The Five People You Meet in Heaven.  His book was transformed into a movie of the same name.  In this book, Eddie, a war veteran, feels that his life has been meaningless as he has spent his days in the dull routine of repairing the rides at a seaside amusement park.  However, when he arrives in heaven he meets five people for whom he has had a profound impact.  He also meets a large group of folks who he affected less directly than the others. 

 Have you ever wondered what 5 people you might meet in heaven—people for whom you have made a difference.  Perhaps one of them will be your own mentor and role model.  While they certainly impacted your life, you changed them as well.  Each of you recognized your own unique gifts and talents because of the connection.  We know that every young person needs and deserves a positive role model and mentor.  It is essential as we all struggle to navigate a world that is yet to be determined.  We live in a time of ambiguity and a positive role model and mentor can be the most essential part of staying grounded and on track.

Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

There are a number of different “Hand Up Not A Hand Out” programs that you can subscribe to.  The Downtown Sacramento project is focused on reducing panhandling in downtown Sacramento by encouraging compassionate folks to donate to a trusted provider who will support the hungry and the homeless.  The Stand Down Program in San Diego works with homeless veterans which focuses on giving veterans a safe haven until they can reconnect with the world.  The federal Lifeline program is there to help families stay in touch, especially in these challenging economic times.  All of these programs are filling existing needs.  They are intervening in the lives of people who need support and a hand-up.

Entrusted Legacy takes a look at this challenge from a different vantage point:  prevention rather than intervening once something has gone awry.  Entrusted Legacy is interested in proactively supporting the development of role models and mentors so youth can make the connections needed to build resiliency and grit.  The work being done around the importance of non-cognitive skills (Paul Tough—How Children Succeed) confirms our belief that these two essentials supports the full development of young people and that the best place to develop those non-cognitive skills is with a caring role model and mentor.

During these past few years alone, education across the nation has experienced many drawbacks. The decline in funding for education has come with many disadvantages such as: fewer staff members, 

cutting after-school programs, getting rid of art programs, an inability to offer necessary school supplies, and even forcing some schools to shut down completely. While your donation to Entrusted Legacy will not solve the education crisis in America, it will help.

Entrusted Legacy, as previously stated, has a commitment to make a positive impact on the youth in California and programs across the nation. Thoughts on Ted Talk with Dan Pallotta—The Way We Think About Charity Is Dead Wrong

In March, 2013, Ted Talks were held at Long Beach and one of the speakers was Dan Pallotta.  He shared his thought that the way we have been taught to think about non-profits undermines charity and “the causes we love and our profound yearning to change the world.”  Pallotta who has raised millions for breast cancer and AIDS research is considered by many as an expert.  He states that there are two rule books in play, one for non-profits and the other for for-profits.  He points out his belief that this started with the Puritans who were aggressive capitalists who were taught to feel badly about the money they made by their Calvinist beliefs.  So to do penance for making money, charity became a “place for penance” and since you can’t make money when you’re doing penance for making money, the entire notion that all of the donated money should go for the cause instead of profit (more recently translated into overhead), was born.

He points out that in his opinion non-profits suffer because they cannot offer adequate compensation to attract the brightest and the best in business to be part of the team or lead the way; they are unable to advertise and market; they are unable to take risks on new revenue generating ideas; they don’t have the time needed to ensure a return on investment; and finally they don’t have the ability to attract risk capital because there is no promise of profit.

Pallotta advocates for looking at philanthropy in a different way if we plan to tackle social causes related to health and human services in a way that will make a difference.  He believes that we can make the philanthropy “pie” bigger is we stop confusing morality with frugality.  His full Ted Talk can be viewed at:
