3.5 Hours to Change America

Entrusted Legacy has raised the question, “Can 3.5 hours a day change America?”  Is there remedy to be found in the 3.5 hours after-school each day?  If we are to believe Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education when he states, "If we are serious about having more students be productive citizens, if we are serious about having more students prepared to be successful in college, dramatically improving the quality and the quantity of after-school programming is going to be at the heart of our work as a country." then the answer is a resounding “YES!”  Entrusted Legacy believes after-school is an integral part of the solution.

After-school programs provide something every person needs—mentors and positive role models.  How many mentors have you had?  Do you remember seeking advice from this wise and trusted counselor and teacher?  Think back to the person who had a profound and positive effect on your life and the choices you’ve made as an adult.  Picture the person’s face.  Hear the words of encouragement and absolute belief in the possibility of you in this person’s voice.  Recall the feelings of self-confidence and assuredness you had in your personal judgment, ability and power to get things done because this person first believed in you.  Was this mentor your parent, a grandparent or your pastor?  Was your mentor a favorite teacher, coach or tutor?  Was it the plumber or mechanic down the street who could fix anything?  Or was it your best friend’s mother who always had time to listen to you?  Imagine what it would be like to have the opportunity to replicate this with hundreds of youth.

Reflecting on the Year

During 2013 Entrusted Legacy had an opportunity to try out several strategies to enlist the support of people across the country and the world to ensure that afterschool professionals are well-prepared to be positive role models and mentors for youth.  Some strategies were very successful—Kayla’s Campaign, crafting a grant-win plan, and figuring out how to enlist the support of individual donors.  This lead-up work has prepared us to launch into 2014 with a solid Business Plan and plenty of opportunities to make a difference in the lives of both adults and youth.  We would encourage you to check us out at www.entrustedlegacy.org and become part of our noble cause.  You may not have the time to be a role model and mentor for youth but you can support someone who does have that time.  Be part of what Margaret Mead calls, “small number of thoughtful, committed individuals” and help us change the world.

Support Anti-Bullying Through Positive Role Models

Bullying appears to be more prevalent now than ever before.  There could be a number of reasons for this.  Surely part of it is that it is more reported than in the past.  When I was a child and other youth bullied, it was passed over with comments like, “Boys will be boys” or “You know how girls are.”  Today we have a better understanding of how harmful incessant teasing, harassment, and intimidation are to youth during their formative years, so we have taken a more active stance against bullying behavior and report it more frequently.

Perhaps another reason we are seeing more bullying is that the media continuously emphasizes violence, getting your way at any cost, and saying and doing things that are unkind and unwarranted.  Think about such popular movies as “Mean Girls” and “My Bodyguard” which show how unpleasant and cruel the world is for youth, and yet, the fact that the content of these films is on the big screen and popular actors are playing the parts of bullies, victims, and onlookers, the notion of bullying can be romanticized.

There are other factors at play as well:  overcrowding, single-parent families, parents working 3-5 jobs just to make ends meet, a school system that no longer meets the needs of its students, and the list could go on and on.  The question for me is, “What is the antidote? and “What can be done to change this increase in bullying behavior?”  I believe that the answer can partially be found in well-trained role models and mentors.  Young adults as well as older folks, coming together and demonstrating, day in and day out, the importance of relationship building, acknowledging the good work of others, and communicating in a preventative way to ensure that conflicts are resolved before they grow legs and become bullying—is a great start to breaking down acts of bullying.

Impact

Entrusted Legacy (ETL) is a non-profit that is working to be sure that every youth has a positive role model and mentor.  We believe that most adults who work with youth, would like to fill this role, but are often unclear about how to do this.  ETL believes that one of the best ways to ensure the number of role models and mentors needed by our youth, is to prepare afterschool professionals to accept this role.

Being a role model begins through building relationships with youth that demonstrate the adult is interested in spending time with the youth, will be there for them to support them and help them make good choices, and ultimately believe in the unique possibilities the young person has.  Role models and mentors must have high standards for themselves and high expectations of those they mentor.  ETL works with partners like Southern California Edison, Consult 4 Kids and private donors to make this happen.  Recently, one person who benefited from this support commented, “I don't know if you know just how much of an impact you have had on my life (career.)  You have redirected my path, confirming to me that YOUTH DEVELOPMENT really can make an impact on our youth if we are dedicated to the systems and processes it takes to follow through with all the training you provided to me.”
